In the past two years. Why might they be red flags for the IRS, because so many people have done it, as you’ve just said?
Ms. YOUNG: A lot of people, when they get a mortgage, will pay points up front, and when you pay points, you can actually deduct that–that year that you get the mortgage, you can deduct this whole amount of points from your overall income. However, when you refinance, you have to spread it out over the life of the loan. So if you have a $4,000 loan, and it’s over 30 years, it’s 1/30th every year that you can deduct. And that’s why it’s good to talk to a professional about that.
HANSEN: OK. And I guess it’s also maybe a red flag if you take a big chunk out of–out of–out of the loan like a cash-out refi type thing?
Ms. YOUNG: Exactly.
HANSEN: Real quickly, any tips for people if they do have the IRS come knocking on their door and physically show up at their house?
Ms. YOUNG: If you are organized, believe it or not, if they see that you’ve got everything in a nice spread sheet, and all your receipts aren’t stuffed into a shoe box, they’ll probably walk away. Chances are, if they–they think that you’ve got it all under control, they’ll say, ‘Great. ,Christian Louboutin Shoes; See you later. Thanks for paying your taxes.’
HANSEN: Why–why aren’t–why aren’t the shoe boxes considered under control? Because that’s…
Ms. YOUNG: Talk to Imelda, right?
HANSEN: OK. But, I mean, what if you also have a–you know, a–a very detailed accounting but you also need a place to keep all the actual hard copies and you don’t have them in a file?
Ms. YOUNG: Well, it will be better if–when the guy shows up at the door just to be nice and organized and have it all laid out for him.
HANSEN: Don’t–don’t bring out the shoe boxes from under the bed, folks. Thank you very much, Christian louboutin Young. You can read more about how to avoid an audit in the March issue of SmartMoney magazine. Our thanks to you.
Ms. YOUNG: Thank you.
HANSEN: Next on EARLY TODAY, we’re going to update this morning’s top stories for you. And how about hanging up on those telemarketers? We’ll tell you why those unwanted sales calls may soon actually be a thing of the past.
